What you’ll be doing

  • Carrying out daily checks across databases, backups, filesystems and tablespaces, identifying errors and capacity issues
  • Investigating failed services, runaway processes and other database or system issues
  • Managing Oracle backups and recovery using RMAN

  • Supporting database deployments and working with developers on schema design and troubleshooting
  • Maintaining and supporting Unix/Linux environments alongside the Oracle database estate
  • Automating routine tasks using Bash/Unix scripting and Windows batch scripting

What we’re looking for

You’ll need solid commercial experience supporting enterprise Oracle databases, ideally Oracle 11g, 19c or newer, combined with strong Unix/Linux administration skills.

Key technical experience includes:

  • Strong Oracle DBA experience, including SQL and PL/SQL
  • Oracle internal packages, including XDBADMIN
  • RMAN backup and recovery
  • Experience with Data Guard, RAC and ASM
  • Knowledge of Dbvisit would be useful
  • Strong Linux/Unix skills, ideally Red Hat, Oracle Enterprise Linux, AIX or Solaris
  • Good understanding of Unix filesystems including ext3, ext4 and ZFS
  • Logical volumes, mounting and SMB
  • SSH, SFTP and Telnet
  • SSH key generation and public key authentication
  • Bash Shell scripting, including tools such as expect
  • Windows batch scripting and PuTTY/Plink
  • Experience with tools such as TOAD, SQL Developer or DBeaver

An Oracle OCP or similar database certification would be beneficial, although relevant commercial experience is more important.

This would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on with both Oracle databases and Unix/Linux environments, rather than a DBA role focused purely on database administration.
