Location: Cardiff (hybrid – some WFH once trained)

A leading organisation is seeking an experienced Data Centre Operator to join their operations team on a long‑term contract. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys problem‑solving, and takes pride in keeping critical systems running smoothly.

Please note: Control‑M experience is essential. Candidates without Control‑M exposure cannot be considered.

Operational Duties

  • Monitor and manage core production systems
  • Respond to event‑driven alerts and monitoring console notifications
  • Liaise with external vendors when support is required
  • Contact on‑call technical specialists during out‑of‑hours incidents
  • Perform first‑line corrective actions on documented administrative systems
  • Run and monitor batch schedules using tools such as Control‑M and VisualCron
  • Execute weekend release jobs/scripts to deploy development changes
  • Manage Xerox bulk printing and other physical operational tasks

Data Centre Activities

  • Support engineers during planned power‑down weekends
  • Verify system availability (e.g., application logins)
  • Conduct physical patrols to check temperature and environmental conditions
  • Maintain security and access logs in line with procedures
  • Carry out ad‑hoc tasks to ensure smooth data centre and batch operations

Candidates with broader scheduling or production experience will be prioritised, especially those able to support the Control‑M scheduling environment and production output processes:

  • Review and maintain operational procedures
  • Produce accurate daily, weekly, monthly, and ad‑hoc reports
  • Apply schedule changes
  • Investigate and resolve production issues within the agreed scope

Essential Skills

  • Strong background in IT operations
  • Ability to work independently and within a small team
  • Self‑motivated, proactive, and solution‑focused
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a 24/7 environment
  • Experienced in root‑cause analysis and incident handling
  • Committed to continuous learning and skill development
  • Control‑M experience is mandatory

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in batch processing and job scheduling
  • Exposure to Microfocus environments
  • Understanding of JCL
  • Korn shell scripting knowledge
  • Familiarity with Linux/UNIX commands
  • Basic understanding of Oracle database structures
  • Awareness of ITIL principles

Shift Pattern

  • 12‑hour shifts (days and nights)
  • 364‑day coverage (Christmas Day off)
  • Weekly shift patterns agreed between the contractor and the organisation
